ASCII Cupcake
1. In general, how many original (new) songs need to be on an EP? (Just asking 'cause, you know, I'm working on an EP (working title is the subject line), and I want to meet with expectations and all. I've got 4 solid new songs, and couple of "danglers" I'm not sure about... but I'm all about quality over quantity. Or, perhaps more to the point given my personal situation right now, finish-sometime-this-decadeability.)

2. Do you want to hear early demo stage samples as I work, or would rather wait 'til they're much more polished?

3. Does the working title frighten you away with its oddness, or is it okay to make it an inside joke as long as it uses cool words like "ASCII" and "cupcake"?

PS - We expect to be going in for more tests on Zoe this Wednesday. I've decided to avoid posting about that stuff here on LJ (to keep this blog a little bit more music focused), so for extremely current news about Zoe as it happens, please add me as a friend on Facebook or Twitter. Don't worry - I'll add you even if I don't know you well, as long as you actually want to read about my daughter. I'm just trying to spare casual Cosmicity fans my day-to-day reports.

1) isn't an EP technically designated by length as opposed to the number of songs? I think four is a good number if they're all really solid.

2) sure, why not!

3) it's your EP, you should name it what YOU want to name it.

1. Cool. I'll have at least the four then.

2. 'cause you didn't really like the demos you heard?

3. I will - just didn't want to release an EP with a name everyone else things is totally stupid or unappealing. Then again, I loved Crackers International, and that's a pretty stupid EP name. ;-)

it's not that I didn't like the demos, but it usually takes me more than one listen to get a feel for it. that, and you WERE right when you said that they were depressing.

I know, they are depressing. Hence my concern about releasing them.

You'll like the newest one. Bouncy beat, optimistic chorus. :-)

it's not that I don't LIKE depressing - I listen to plenty of generally depressing music! But when I heard it, it was like I could actually feel the depression...I don't know if it's because I actually know you or if you're really good at depression. Maybe it's both!

Heh... thanks. I'll take that as a compliment. I always want to push what I'm feeling out into the music. If you felt that, it worked. :-)

1. depends. are you gonna do remixes as well? if you're gonna put on some mixes, i'd say four songs is fine. otherwise, i might say more tracks. on the other hand, i'm thinking of a physical release. if i bought a cd with four tracks, say 20 minutes, i'd not want to pay more than $5. digital release, i'm much less choosy.

2. i think it'd be much more fun to hear the demos after the tracks come out, so we can see how far they'd advanced. or, even more fun, the demos of stuff you didn't finish.

3. nah, sounds good!

PS: in a way, it might be good for you to have a channel where you can focus on one thing, you know? nonetheless, the updates are good...

actually, i have an idea. i'm gonna shoot you an email.

1. I have a separate idea for official remixes that I'll announce at a later date, so probably not remixes... but maybe I'll have a couple of alternate versions or something. I like doing fast songs slow and vice versa. Or I might finish one of the other tracks as an instrumental, just to have a 5th track.

2. Funny you should mention the demos - I always save my demo tracks from my old albums, so I still have demos of tons of stuff going all the way back to Isabella. I was kicking around the idea of posting a few for laughs sometime. But in this case, I'm kinda interested in teasing the work in advance just to get a feel for how it might be received.

3. Cool.

1) I think 5 or 6 tracks is pretty much the standard for an EP. I mean it could even be 4 new tracks and a couple of mixes too.

2) I would listen to whatever you felt comfortable with us hearing. Rough mixes or whatever.

3) I love the title. It so sounds like something you would do.

Keep forgetting you are on Facebook, Since I have you on Last.fm I'll have to add you on there too..

1. Yeah, I guess that is the standard. I'll have to see if I can't squeeze at least one more track out of my brain. :-)

2. Cool.

3. Thanks!

I think 4 is a pretty good number for original songs. Then maybe 6, 8 max for the whole thing.

1) 4 or 5. If you feel you've got four strong ones, go with it. The PSB's Disco 3 EP had like five songs, but only three or four were worthwhile. I'm agreed with quality over quantity.

2) I would love to hear demos. I love hearing how things progress over time.

3) It's awesome. Don't let anyone dissuade you.
